5 REASONS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH TULUM, MEXICO
Under 90 miles away from popular Cancun, lies the entrancing and laid back place of Tulum, Quintana Roo. Filled with all sorts of travellers from lavish holiday makers to drifting hippies to tanned backpackers, there is just a magic about Tulum that is found here that everyone is drawn towards. Endless untouched white coastline meets with the clearest of water. Bohemian, lush green streets are dotted with yoga joints, trendy cafes and shops. It has arguably the prettiest of all Mayan sites plus pure natural wonders like Cenotes waiting to be swam in. There are so many things to love about Tulum, a favourite among many travellers I've met. Here I've narrowed it down to just five.
#1 YOU CAN CYCLE THROUGH PARADISE AND WISH THAT YOU LIVE THERE
Cycling is the way to get around Tulum. You must rent a bicycle while you're there and go out, get lost and explore. They are easily rented from your hostel or local bike shop for cheap. The roads are well paved and flat and even hold bicycle paths on the main road heading to the beach.
I cycled for miles, all around town, up and down the coast, stopping for bites to eat and smoothies or cold Michelada's. I ended up getting lost in the lush jungle but found gorgeous stretches of deserted beach. There is no better feeling than cycling around the busy streets at dusk zig-zagging through people or moving food carts or traffic feeling like a local.
#2 YOU CAN PARTY FOR CHEAP
Everyone has heard of the all inclusive holiday package deals available in Mexico. But have you heard of all inclusive hostels? For under £25 per night, you can stay at Lucky Traveler Hostel in Tulum which includes ALL food and drinks (alcohol!) as well as your bed.
This fun and inviting hostel hosts an outdoor pool, BBQ area, movie nights (they have their own cinema), day tours, karaoke, evening entertainment, pool cocktail bar and they even supply free bicycles. The owners go out of their way to help you with anything including booking excursions and being so sociable therefore putting you at ease and feeling welcome. It doesn't matter if it's morning, the middle of the day or evening, every meal, cocktail, shot or beer is ALL INCLUSIVE.
#3 YOU CAN 'FIND YOURSELF'
A term used often when discovering new places and starting a new journey. Use Tulum as a gateway for your own personal and spiritual path. It's a hippie's dream living in jungle paradise with the most perfect blue waters and powdery sand at your feet.
There are loads of activities that attract people looking to enhance their well being and to become more connected. In Tulum you can find yoga retreats, meditation classes, holistic therapy plus trendy, health food cafe's and hangouts.
#4 YOU CAN EXPLORE CLIFF-TOP MAYAN RUINS
Sitting upon a limestone cliff, ancient Mayan ruins lay above the Caribbean Sea. Not only a stunning backdrop, this archaeological site is especially unique as it was used as a seaport transporting goods such as turquoise and jade.
Wander through the temple ruins and make sure to catch glimpses of large iguanas resting in the sun between the bricked walls. The ruins themselves are stunning to see but it's the location itself that really makes it extra special and worthwhile. Try and go early in the morning as this Maya site gets packed with tourists.
#5 YOU CAN BE AMAZED BY THE TRULY PERFECT BEACHES
I can't begin to explain how perfect the beaches are here. Blessed with the most inviting crystal clear blue waters, the whitest of sand, a laid back atmosphere and incredibly clean. This Caribbean haven is where memories are made! To make them even more spectacular, the coast is surrounded by luscious green wild jungle, where you can cycle through to find the perfect spot on the coast to swim, bathe and play.
As well as being protected as a turtle nesting area, the beaches are brilliantly maintained making it hard to believe the amount of tourism this region sees as they are so spotless. Enjoy activities such as paddle-boarding, kayaking, snorkelling, scuba-diving in complete paradise. Even though there are parts where you can find chill-out bars, beach clubs and lazy bean bags, there is still so much that is untouched.
Tulum was one of my favourite places while seeing Mexico with so much to fall in love with. Make sure to add it to your list if you plan on visiting this beautiful country. I can't wait to get back to experience more of it.
